There is a great map that shows how you can skip from one series to another within the Alfred Library. There is also a Primer level of this book which complete beginners with no experience might want to use. Bastien is great for younger students, because it spends a lot of time explaining the fundamentals of music theory and piano play. The Piano Basics Primer is suitable for kids 7 and above. All of the books listed below do a fine job of developing the student systematically to becoming exceptional players. This is actually one of the main advantages of learning piano; when you learn scales you generally learn to play multiple notes at a time, making it easier to remember which scales have which sharps and flats.

KayaTZ A really beautiful home on a wonderful island. Another great method for teaching jazz music is the Jimmy Amadie method. The books are specifically designed as a way to warm up every day, and they really are a great help for all levels of players. If a child hears fine music from the day of his birth and learns to play it himself, he develops sensitivity, discipline and endurance. It goes on to present space and line notes on both the bass and treble clef, introduction to the flat and sharp signs, intervals and reading the grand staff.

It does start a little slow, so you may want to go up a level or two if you find it to be too simple. This method teaches great tone and technique, featuring legato, staccato, arpeggios, and chord patterns in an easy to play, light-hearted format. For the younger beginner, check out Teaching Little Fingers to Play, which is a great introduction before moving onto the big red books. Not this one! This lesson book, complete with writing and reading assignments, is a great supplemental resource when working with a professional teacher one-on-one.

Another disadvantage is that the major classical composers should be presented to the students at a much earlier stage than is typical in this method. You could choose a single method to teach across the board — all new students start with the same materials.
